The core function of an oil seal is to achieve"static-dynamic dual sealing":the outer edge maintains static sealing with the housing,while the lip tightly contacts the rotating shaft surface with the help of spring force,containing the oil during high-speed rotation.The sealing contact area is extremely narrow,typically less than 0.5mm,yet it relies on good elasticity and lubrication conditions to maintain long-term sealing integrity.If any part of this system fails,lubricating oil can break through,resulting in leakage.

Common causes of oil leakage can be summarized into the following categories:

First,improper installation.For example,using unqualified press-fitting tooling may deform the oil seal,or the lip may be scratched by sharp edges such as threads or splines during installation.Additionally,excessive pressing force or misalignment can easily cause spring failure,lip flipping,or partial wear,leading to rapid loss of sealing function.

Second,issues with the quality and selection of the oil seal itself.Springs that are too tight or too loose are manufacturing defects:if too loose,the clamping force is insufficient;if too tight,wear accelerates.Meanwhile,if the oil seal material is incompatible with the lubricating oil,it may cause lip swelling,brittleness,hardening,or cracking,resulting in loss of sealing ability.

The working environment is also an important factor.If equipment cleanliness is low,metal debris or impurities invade the lip area can accelerate wear.If the rotating shaft surface treatment is poor—such as insufficient roughness,low hardness,or the presence of scratches and corrosion—it can easily scratch the lip and compromise the integrity of the dynamic seal.
