In the pump industry, rotor pumps mostly use flexible couplings. These couplings can be further divided into two types: those without elastic elements and those with elastic elements. Flexible couplings without elastic elements, such as universal joint couplings, are suitable for applications where there is a certain angle between two shafts and the rotational speed is not high. The single universal joint type has a relatively simple structure and is often used in light-duty auxiliary transmissions; although the double universal joint type has a more complex structure, it provides smoother transmission, allows for greater angular displacement, and is commonly found in medium and small vehicles or engineering machinery.

Flexible couplings with elastic elements offer vibration damping and shock absorption capabilities, making them more suitable for working conditions with frequent vibrations or impact loads. For example, the plum coupling is widely used in transmission systems of small and medium-power pumps and compressors due to its compact structure, easy installation and disassembly, and excellent vibration damping performance. Its elastic plum block transmits torque while moderately compensating for deviations, offering cost-effective practicality.  

The diaphragm coupling, with its metal diaphragm as the core component, offers advantages such as high alignment accuracy, no need for lubrication, and easy maintenance. Although its buffering capacity is relatively limited, it is commonly used in high-speed precision transmission applications due to its adaptability to high speeds and smooth operation, such as in certain high-performance centrifugal pumps or aerospace auxiliary equipment.
