Information

In fact, the root cause of short seal service life often lies not in the seal itself, but in non-standard installation processes and defective front-end piping. No matter how good the structure or how expensive the material, when installation goes wrong or piping conditions are harsh, seals will still wear rapidly, leak, and be scrapped. By getting the most easily overlooked installation points and piping misconceptions right, seal life can potentially double.

 I. Mechanical Seal Installation

Mechanical seals are precision components, extremely sensitive to coaxiality and compression. Many failures are planted the moment they are installed.

Improper compression adjustment is the number one problem. If pressed too tightly, the spring operates under long-term overload, friction pair resistance surges, heat generation becomes severe, and the elastic ring ages faster; if pressed too loosely, the end faces cannot adhere firmly, causing continuous micro-leakage after operation. Each model has a standard compression range, and it must never be adjusted by feel or experience alone.

Next is pump shaft coaxiality deviation and excessive shaft runout. After prolonged use, shaft sleeve wear and increased bearing clearance cause radial runout of the rotating shaft to rise, and the force on the seal end face fluctuates, quickly wearing through local areas. During major overhauls, don't just replace the seal—bearing and shaft sleeve wear must be checked simultaneously.

Installation environment cleanliness is equally critical. Sand, metal chips, and welding slag sticking to the seal end face will scratch the friction pair the moment the pump starts, directly scrapping the precision. Before disassembly and assembly, be sure to clean the pump chamber and shaft surface thoroughly, and never let hard objects bump the seal end face.

There is also the condition of the shaft sleeve itself. Old shaft sleeves with pitting and scratches will continuously cut the seal ring. Replacing only the seal without replacing the shaft sleeve means the new seal will fail again within days of installation, falling into a cycle of repeated repairs—damaged shaft sleeves must be dealt with together.

 II. Piping Design

Many people think piping only responsible for material feeding, and has nothing to do with seal life—this is a typical misjudgment. Unreasonable piping brings impact, cavitation, and pulsation that constantly torment the seal components.

Misconception one: inlet piping diameter is too small and there are too many elbows. High feed resistance easily forms negative pressure air intake, followed by cavitation and gas-liquid mixed transport, and the risk of seal dry grinding rises sharply.

Misconception two: lack of buffering and rigid piping connections. As a positive displacement pump, operation itself has pressure pulsation, and rigid piping transmits vibration directly to the pump head, causing force fluctuations on the seal end face and leakage comes knocking. When conditions permit, installing a flexible expansion joint can effectively isolate vibration.

Misconception three: tank bottom extraction piping lacks anti-vortex design. When the tank discharges material, it draws in a large amount of air, and the pump operates under long-term gas-liquid mixed transport, significantly increasing seal load.

Misconception four: starting the pump with the outlet valve closed. The instantaneous impact load of pressurized startup is enormous, directly smashing onto the seal end face—repeated this way, the seal will inevitably fail. The correct approach is to confirm the outlet piping is unobstructed before starting the pump.

Misconception five: piping has no drain and exhaust points. Accumulated gas cannot be discharged, and the pump idles intermittently—even if equipped with dry-running resistant seals, their fault tolerance will be slowly exhausted.

 III. Daily Operation and Maintenance

Reasonable inspection can predict failures in advance and avoid unexpected shutdowns. Pay attention to abnormal temperature rise and unusual noise of the pump body—abnormal temperature rise often means the friction pair operating condition is already wrong; regularly check for trace dripping—mechanical seals are not absolutely zero-leakage, normal liquid film is fine, but if leakage continues to increase, investigate immediately; during long-term shutdown, don't let the medium remain trapped in the pump chamber, and materials prone to crystallization must be promptly cleaned from the pump body and seal area after shutdown, otherwise the seal ring will swell and scale, creating hidden dangers when restarted.
