In industrial food production, material conveying is the core process that runs through the entire production cycle. Compared with low-viscosity fluids such as water and beverages, the conveying of high-viscosity materials like honey, syrup, peanut butter, chocolate, and fruit/vegetable purée presents a significantly greater challenge. The unique physical properties of such materials impose stringent requirements on conveying equipment in terms of performance, hygienic design, and compatibility. Compliant and effective sanitary pumps are the key equipment for ensuring stable production and qualified product quality.

The pumping operation of high-viscosity food materials involves multiple practical difficulties,  which are also the core considerations for equipment selection. First, high-viscosity materials have extremely poor fluidity, and conventional conveying equipment cannot maintain a stable flow rate. Specialized equipment with strong self-priming capability is essential to solve problems such as flow interruption and erratic delivery. Second, most fruit jams and purées contain suspended solids like fruit pulp and seeds. Conventional pumps with complex internal structures are prone to material accumulation and clogging, directly interrupting the production process.

At the same time, viscous materials have a distinctive adhesion characteristic. After equipment shutdown, the material tends to stick to seals and critical mechanical components. Long-term accumulation can cause seal leakage and excessive wear on parts when the equipment is restarted, significantly shortening the service life of the pump. In addition, these materials are generally temperature-sensitive. Fluctuations in ambient temperature change their viscosity; under low-temperature conditions, honey and chocolate syrup quickly thicken and solidify. Auxiliary temperature control devices must be employed to maintain material fluidity and ensure normal conveying operations.

Food production is directly related to consumer safety, and conveying equipment must comply with strict industry hygiene standards. Currently, the widely recognized FDA, EHEDG, and 3-A sanitary standards serve as the core basis for the design and manufacture of sanitary pumps. Pumps that meet these certified standards feature smooth internal surfaces without dead corners and seam-free construction, which structurally eliminate hiding places for residues and inhibit the growth of bacteria and microorganisms. When paired with a CIP (Clean-in-Place) system, the equipment can achieve thorough cleaning, completely removing residual materials from previous batches and effectively avoiding cross-contamination risks between batches, thereby meeting the hygiene requirements of high-end food production.

For the conveying needs of high-viscosity food materials, the rotary lobe pump is a highly compatible core equipment. Its greatest advantage lies in its gentle conveying mode, with extremely low shear force. It can preserve the original texture and structure of peanut butter, syrup, and similar materials without compromising product mouthfeel or quality. Its internal structure is simplified with few components, making it less prone to clogging by particle-laden viscous materials, and it is suitable for a wide range of high-viscosity, highly adhesive food materials. The pump also features built-in self-priming capability, easily handling thick and difficult-to-convey materials. Moreover, it is easy to disassemble and clean, which minimizes the risk of food contamination to the greatest extent.

To thoroughly resolve the clogging issue in high-viscosity material conveying, multiple standardized preventive measures can be adopted during production. Match the pump size to the specific material viscosity and solid particle size, so as to eliminate clogging risks at the equipment selection stage. Install an external heating jacket temperature control device to maintain a constant conveying temperature and prevent the material from solidifying or agglomerating. Implement a routine pipeline flushing system to periodically clean residual material inside the equipment, avoiding long-term accumulation and hardening that could lead to blockages.

The selection of conveying equipment for high-viscosity food materials has no fixed template; it must be determined based on actual production conditions. Food safety and hygiene are the primary principles in equipment selection – all equipment must meet food-grade cleanliness requirements. Material viscosity is the core selection criterion – highly concentrated materials must use dedicated conveying equipment. By combining material characteristics, particle content, and production flow rate requirements, precisely matching a suitable rotary lobe pump and other compatible equipment can effectively balance production efficiency, product quality, and operational safety.
