In the selection decision of industrial conveying equipment, many purchasers often take the initial quotation as the core judgment criterion, but ignore the hidden costs accumulated during the long-term operation of equipment. In fields such as sewage treatment and chemical production, single screw pumps were once the mainstream choice for conveying sludge and high-viscosity media. However, the application trend has undergone obvious changes in recent years, and more and more technical personnel with front-line operation and maintenance experience begin to prefer rotor pumps.

The root of the performance difference between the two lies in the difference in core structure. Single screw pumps rely on the meshing and extrusion of metal rotors and rubber stators to realize medium conveying, and the rotor and stator are always in contact friction state during operation. The cam type rotor pump relies on two synchronously counter-rotating metal rotors to push the medium forward, with designed clearances left between the rotors without direct contact. This structural difference directly determines that the total life cycle cost performance of the two pumps varies widely in subsequent use.
From the perspective of single procurement cost, single screw pumps have obvious price advantages. Under the same flow and pressure parameters, the procurement quotation of single screw pumps is significantly lower than that of rotor pumps, which is also the reason why screw pumps are more likely to win the bid in many low-price bidding projects. However, this expenditure is only the threshold of equipment investment, and the subsequent costs incurred by operation and maintenance are often far higher than the price difference of initial procurement.
After the equipment is put into use, energy consumption cost becomes the core part of long-term expenditure. Since the rotor and rubber stator of the screw pump rub continuously during operation, the operation resistance is greater, the corresponding operating current is higher, and the power consumption increases accordingly. In contrast, the rotor pump under the same working condition has smaller rotation resistance, and general industry data shows that its energy consumption is 25% to 30% lower than that of the screw pump. Taking a 7.5kW pump as an example, if it keeps running continuously for 24 hours, the annual electricity cost saved is very considerable, and the operation for more than two years can cover the procurement price difference between the two pumps.
Maintenance cost and downtime loss are the hidden expenditures that are most easily ignored by many factories. The rubber stator of the screw pump is a wearing part, and sand content in the medium and dry grinding will greatly shorten its service life, with a replacement frequency much higher than that of metal parts. The cost of a single replacement of stator and rotor can reach more than 60% of the purchase price of the whole pump, and the replacement operation requires the whole pump to be completely removed from the pipeline, which will lead to long-term downtime of the production line. In contrast, the rotor pump adopts quick-opening pump cover design, so there is no need to disassemble the pipeline and motor during maintenance, and a single person can complete the replacement of wearing parts such as rotors, which only takes about half an hour in the whole process. For scenarios with continuous production and strict environmental protection assessment, the difference in downtime length is directly related to production efficiency and compliance risks.
In addition to regular wear, the tolerance to abnormal working conditions also directly affects the service life of equipment. Single screw pumps have obvious performance shortcomings — they cannot withstand dry running. Once the hopper is emptied and the medium supply is cut off, the rubber stator that loses medium lubrication and heat dissipation will heat up sharply in a short time, and may suffer from burning and locking failure within 30 seconds. The rubber rotor pump, with its wide flow passage and dry-wear resistant structural design, can still operate stably under material cut-off conditions, and this feature can effectively avoid a large number of unexpected maintenance costs in scenarios with large liquid level fluctuations and frequent start-stop.
Therefore, if the conveying medium is clean, has good lubricity, extremely low solid content, and the on-site operation is standardized without idling, the single screw pump is still a choice with cost advantages. But if it is faced with complex media such as sludge and sand-containing impurities, and the production line requires continuous and stable operation, then the comprehensive advantages of rubber rotor pumps will be more prominent.
