In the field of industrial fluid transfer,the choice of equipment material is directly related to the stability and safety of production.As core equipment for transferring high-viscosity,particle-containing,and corrosive media,the stainless steel material selection for the wetted parts of rotor pumps is particularly critical.304,304L,316,316L,and duplex steel are the five most commonly used materials.Their core differences stem from chemical composition,which in turn determines their respective corrosion resistance,mechanical strength,and application range.

304 stainless steelis the most widely used general-purpose austenitic stainless steel,containing about 18%chromium and 8%nickel.It has good comprehensive corrosion resistance,excellent machinability,and high cost-effectiveness,meeting the needs of most conventional working conditions.However,in environments containing chloride ions,such as seawater,brine,and chlorine-containing disinfectants,it is prone to pitting and crevice corrosion.
304L stainless steelis a low-carbon version of 304,with a significantly reduced carbon content.Its greatest advantage is excellent weldability.The low carbon content effectively prevents the precipitation of carbides at grain boundaries during welding,thus avoiding intergranular corrosion.In non-welded areas,its corrosion resistance is basically the same as that of ordinary 304.
316 stainless steel adds 2%-3%molybdenum to 304.This compositional change brings a qualitative improvement in corrosion resistance.Molybdenum significantly enhances the material's resistance to chloride ions,while also showing better tolerance to various organic and inorganic acids.
316L stainless steel combines the high corrosion resistance of 316 and the excellent weldability of 304L.It is the most widely used high-performance stainless steel in chemical,food&pharmaceutical,and marine engineering fields.It can work stably for a long time in environments containing chloride ions and acidic media,while ensuring that the corrosion resistance of welded joints does not decrease.
Duplex steel has a microstructure consisting of approximately 50%ferrite and 50%austenite.This unique structure gives it comprehensive properties far exceeding those of ordinary austenitic stainless steels.Its yield strength is twice that of 304 and 316,and it has extremely strong resistance to stress corrosion cracking and pitting.It is particularly suitable for extreme working conditions where both strong corrosion and high pressure exist simultaneously.
Key Points for Selecting Stainless Steel Material for Rotor Pumps
1.Select according to the medium being transferred:If the medium is non-corrosive fluids such as clean water,steam,or air,304 or 304Lfully meets the requirements.If the medium contains chloride ions or is strongly acidic,then 316 or 316Lwith added molybdenum must be selected.
2.Select according to the processing technology:For rotor pump components and associated piping systems that require welded assembly,in order to ensure the corrosion resistance of the welded area,low-carbon grades with the"L"designationshould be given priority.
3.Select according to working conditions:For extreme working conditions with strong corrosion,high pressure,and high temperature simultaneously,such as offshore platforms and core areas of petrochemical refining units,duplex steelwith superior strength and corrosion resistance should be considered.
4.Select according to comprehensive cost:The 304 series has the lowest initial procurement costand the highest cost-effectiveness.Although the 316 series and duplex steel require a larger initial investment,they can significantly extend equipment service life and reduce downtime for maintenance in corrosive environments,often making them more economical from a full life-cycle perspective.
