Information

The continuous development of the chemical industry has put forward higher requirements for the raw material conveying link. Different characteristics of media need to be matched with different types of conveying equipment. Among various types of pumps, cam rotor pumps and centrifugal pumps are the most widely used, but there are significant differences in performance and applicable scenarios between the two.

Differences in Working Principle and Structure

The cam rotor pump is a positive displacement pump, whose core is a pair of intermeshing cam rotors. When the motor drives the rotors to rotate, a sealed chamber is formed between the rotors and the pump casing. The liquid is sucked in and discharged through the periodic volume change of the chamber. This design gives it the characteristics of stable flow, low pulsation, and strong self-priming ability (up to 8-9 meters), and it is insensitive to changes in medium viscosity. As a representative of positive displacement pumps, the rotor pump shows unique advantages when handling special media.

The centrifugal pump relies on the centrifugal force generated by the high-speed rotation of the impeller to convey liquid. The liquid enters the impeller and is thrown to the outlet, while a low-pressure area is formed at the center of the impeller to suck in new liquid. As a dynamic pump, it is characterized by large flow rate, high head, but poor self-priming ability (usually requiring priming), and the flow rate fluctuates with changes in system resistance.

Key Performance Comparison

In terms of medium adaptability, the cam rotor pump can handle fluids with a viscosity ranging from 1cP to 2500,000cP, and can convey slurries with a solid content of up to 70%. The clearance design between the rotor and the pump casing can effectively avoid jamming by solid particles. The centrifugal pump is generally only suitable for clean liquids with a viscosity below 500cP. When the solid content of the medium exceeds 5%, the wear of the impeller will increase sharply.

In terms of energy efficiency performance, when conveying high-viscosity media, the volumetric efficiency of the cam rotor pump can reach over 90%, while the efficiency of the centrifugal pump may drop to below 50% due to slip loss. Taking the conveying of a 5000cP polymer as an example, the energy consumption of the cam rotor pump is 30-40% lower than that of the centrifugal pump. However, under the working condition of low-viscosity media with large flow rates, the centrifugal pump has an obvious efficiency advantage.

In terms of maintenance cost, the cam rotor pump adopts a mechanical seal + flushing system design, and the service life of the standard shaft seal can reach 8,000 hours. After the rotor wears, the service cycle can be extended by adjusting the clearance. The mechanical seal and bearing of the centrifugal pump are more prone to damage due to axial force, and the impeller must be replaced after wear.

Selection Suggestions

If it is necessary to convey high-viscosity, solid-containing, toxic, harmful, flammable or explosive chemical raw materials, and there are high requirements for self-priming ability, sealing performance, and operational stability, the cam rotor pump is a more suitable choice. For large chemical enterprises that convey low-viscosity, clean media and have high requirements for flow rate and head, the centrifugal pump has better economic efficiency.
