In the daily operation of wastewater treatment plants, the sludge discharge process of high-efficiency sedimentation tanks is a key node to ensure effluent water quality. Many plants have encountered thorny problems such as frequent blockages, interrupted sludge conveying, and turbid effluent due to improper selection of sludge discharge equipment. Lobe rotor pumps, with their unique working characteristics, have gradually replaced centrifugal pumps and become the mainstream choice for sludge discharge in high-efficiency sedimentation tanks.

Centrifugal pumps rely on the centrifugal force generated by high-speed rotation of the impeller to throw out the medium. They have a simple structure and high flow velocity, making them suitable for conveying clean water and low-concentration sewage, but their tolerance to impurities and high-concentration media is extremely poor. In contrast, lobe rotor pumps, as a type of positive displacement pump, rely on two synchronously rotating lobes meshing with each other to push the medium through volume changes. Just like squeezing a hose by hand to feed material at a constant speed, the adaptability of lobe rotor pumps to media far exceeds that of centrifugal pumps.

The core differences between the two are mainly reflected in four key dimensions:

1. Anti-clogging performance: The impeller clearance of centrifugal pumps is narrow. Impurities such as hair, fibers, and sand particles are very likely to wrap around the blades or jam the impeller, leading to frequent shutdowns for cleaning. Lobe rotor pumps adopt a wide flow channel design with no narrow gaps inside, allowing them to smoothly pass through various impurities in the sludge, basically without clogging issues.

2. Medium concentration adaptability: Centrifugal pumps can only convey clean water and dilute sewage with extremely low solid content. When the sludge concentration is slightly higher, problems such as inability to pump water or even dry running occur. Lobe rotor pumps can stably convey high-solid sludge, settled bottom sludge, and thick slurry, fully matching the sludge discharge requirements of sedimentation tanks.

3. Shear force impact on sedimentation effect: The high-speed rotating impeller of centrifugal pumps generates strong shear on the medium, easily breaking up the flocculated sludge clumps formed in the high-efficiency sedimentation tank, causing the tank water to become turbid. Lobe rotor pumps adopt a low-speed conveying mode, with extremely low shear force, and can completely preserve the floc structure.

4. Self-priming ability and installation convenience: Centrifugal pumps have almost no self-priming ability. They must be primed with water and have a foot valve installed before use, making them unsuitable for deep pit sludge suction. Lobe rotor pumps have strong self-priming ability, requiring no priming or foot valve, and can directly suction sludge from the deep pit at the bottom of the sedimentation tank.

It is precisely these characteristics that make lobe rotor pumps the optimal choice for high-efficiency sedimentation tanks. A large amount of settled sludge, flocs, and fine sand particles accumulate at the bottom of the high-efficiency sedimentation tank, with extremely high impurity content. Centrifugal pumps simply cannot operate stably in this environment, whereas lobe rotor pumps can achieve 24-hour continuous sludge discharge, greatly improving production efficiency. At the same time, their low-shear characteristic ensures the flocculation effect and avoids excessive suspended solids in the effluent. In addition, lobe rotor pumps provide stable pressure and flow rate, can convey high-concentration sludge over long distances to thickening tanks and filter press rooms, and the uniform feeding significantly improves the dewatering efficiency of the filter press. From a long-term operation and maintenance perspective, lobe rotor pumps are wear-resistant, corrosion-resistant, have a simple structure and quick-disassembly design, with a failure rate much lower than that of centrifugal pumps, effectively reducing downtime and replacement costs of accessories.
