In many industrial fields such as petroleum, chemical, food, and pharmaceutical, positive displacement rotary pumps undertake critical fluid conveying tasks. Among them, rotary lobe pumps and gear pumps are the two most commonly used types, and many enterprises often find themselves in a dilemma when selecting. In fact, there is no absolute superiority or inferiority between the two, only whether they highly match the actual working conditions.

From the perspective of working principle, the rotary lobe pump relies on a pair of synchronously counter-rotating non-contact rotors to achieve fluid conveying through periodic volume changes of the cavity, relying on precise clearances for sealing. The gear pump, on the other hand, conveys fluid through the volume change of the spaces between two meshing gears (external or internal meshing), with direct metal contact between the gears.  

In terms of core performance, the differences between the two are obvious. Flow stability: the flow pulsation of the rotary lobe pump is extremely small, making it particularly suitable for precision metering applications; while the gear pump has some flow pulsation, which is more obvious in models with fewer teeth. Self-priming capacity: the rotary lobe pump performs better, reaching 8-9 meters of water column, while the gear pump is generally around 3-5 meters.  

Applicable medium viscosity is one of the most critical differences between the two. The rotary lobe pump can adapt to an extremely wide viscosity range, conveying media from 1 cP to 2.5 million cP, and can also handle materials containing soft particles, fibers, or even a small amount of gas; the gear pump is generally only suitable for medium viscosity media of 1-100,000 cP, and is not suitable for conveying liquids containing hard particles, as this will accelerate gear wear.  

High temperature resistance: the rotary lobe pump can reach operating temperatures above 200°C by selecting high-temperature resistant seals and materials; the gear pump is relatively limited in high temperature resistance due to its gear material and sealing structure. Operating noise: since the rotors are non-contact, the rotary lobe pump operates with much lower noise than the gear pump which has metal meshing.  

Cost and pressure: the gear pump has obvious advantages, with lower initial purchase and later maintenance costs, a simple structure that is easy to repair, and can withstand high pressures above 25 MPa; the rotary lobe pump, due to its complex structure and expensive spare parts, has higher overall costs and is generally suitable for medium and low pressure conditions below 1.2 MPa.  

Therefore, when conveying high-viscosity materials, media containing soft particles or fibers, and in food and pharmaceutical industries requiring no pulsation and low shear, the rotary lobe pump is the preferred choice. When conveying clean, lubricating liquids, system pressure exceeds 5 MPa, or in scenarios with limited budget and tight installation space, the gear pump has more advantages.  

Several aspects need attention: not all rotary lobe pumps are resistant to high temperatures – nitrile rubber rotors are not suitable for high-temperature conditions; when gear pumps convey high-viscosity media, they need to reduce speed and increase clearance, which reduces efficiency; even pumps with strong self-priming capacity must be filled and vented before startup.  

In summary, there is no absolutely better pump, only the more suitable choice. For smooth, clean, solid-containing, high-viscosity conditions, choose a rotary lobe pump; for high pressure, economical, and compact conditions, choose a gear pump.
