Inlet and Outlet Piping: Isolation, Vibration Damping, and Flexibility
Shut-off valves must be installed on both the inlet and outlet pipelines to quickly isolate the pump from the system during maintenance or emergencies. Simultaneously, the piping design should fully consider flexibility. By rationally arranging elbows or installing expansion joints, stress caused by thermal expansion/contraction or installation deviations can be absorbed, significantly reducing the additional loads on the pump nozzles and avoiding flange leaks or pump body damage.
Suction Piping: The Core is Preventing Cavitation
The design of the suction-side piping directly affects whether the pump can avoid cavitation. The pipeline should be as short and straight as possible, minimizing sharp bends to reduce friction losses. The pipeline layout must avoid creating high-point air pockets. If unavoidable due to layout constraints, a vent valve must be installed at the highest point to promptly discharge accumulated air, ensuring the medium continuously fills the pump cavity. For various types of rotor pumps, this is fundamental to ensuring suction performance.
Setting a Proper Pipeline Slope
When the suction line is long, a certain slope should be set, typically requiring a slope i ≥ 5‰. The slope direction depends on the relative position of the pump and the supply vessel: If the pump is installed below the vessel, the pipeline should slope toward the pump, facilitating media flow by gravity; if the pump is above the vessel, the pipeline should slope toward the vessel, preventing residual liquid in the pipeline from draining after shutdown, which could create cavitation conditions upon restart.
Essential Protective Accessories and Space Reservation
A strainer should be installed after the inlet shut-off valve (close to the pump) to intercept impurities and protect the pump's internal rotors and seals. A check valve must be installed on the outlet pipeline to prevent system media backflow during shutdown, which could cause pump reversal and damage. Furthermore, the arrangement of all piping and valves must reserve sufficient and accessible physical space for pump operation, daily inspection, and future maintenance, avoiding compromised maintainability due to a cramped layout.
The piping design for cam rotor pumps requires a holistic consideration of multiple dimensions: isolation reliability, stress mitigation, cavitation protection, slope assistance, and maintenance convenience. Carefully planned piping is an indispensable foundation for the long-term, smooth, and efficient operation of the pump unit.
