In the field of industrial fluid transfer, the degree of matching directly determines the vitality of the pumping system. When the medium changes from common clear water to viscous, solid-containing, or sensitive materials, the performance requirements for pumps undergo fundamental changes. At this point, the advantages of the cam rotor pump (often directly called a rotary pump) stand out among various pump types, becoming an irreplaceable solution.

The core advantages of the cam rotor pump stem from its positive displacement working principle. Unlike self-priming pumps that rely on impeller centrifugal force for conveying, the rotary pump drives two rubber or metal cam rotors via a pair of synchronous gears to rotate in opposite directions within the pump chamber, forming periodically changing enclosed cavities, thereby "enveloping" the medium and pushing it out steadily. Its advantages are finally realized as follows:

Firstly, it is extremely insensitive to changes in medium viscosity and provides a stable flow rate. Whether conveying thin liquids like water or pastes and slurries with viscosities as high as tens of thousands of centipoise, the delivery volume of the rotary pump remains essentially constant, and the output flow rate has a strict linear relationship with the rotational speed. This makes it excel in the food industry (e.g., jam, yogurt), chemical industry (e.g., resin, paint), and environmental protection industry (e.g., concentrated sludge). For instance, when conveying fruit and vegetable residue slurry containing fibers, it can maintain stable output, whereas centrifugal self-priming pumps might experience a sharp decline in performance curves due to increased viscosity.

Secondly, excellent passing capability and low shear force. The smooth cavity design and flexible rotor profile of the rotary pump enable it to convey media containing soft solid particles (e.g., fruit pulp, activated sludge flocs) or long fibers without damage. Its "gentle" conveying method avoids the destruction of material structure caused by high-speed shear, which is crucial for processes requiring preservation of product sensory characteristics or biological activity.

Furthermore, good wear resistance and maintainability. For abrasive media (e.g., sewage), service life can be extended by selecting combinations such as wear-resistant liners and hardened steel rotors. After wear, typically only the rotors or liners need replacement, rather than the entire pump body, making maintenance costs relatively controllable.

In comparison, the efficiency of ordinary centrifugal self-priming pumps decreases significantly under high-viscosity conditions, and they struggle to convey large particles or sensitive materials. Although open-impeller self-priming pumps demonstrate flexibility in mobile drainage applications (e.g., handling rainwater) through valve-regulated flow control, when facing viscous, non-Newtonian fluids or process stages requiring precise and stable conveying, the advantages of the rotary pump's positive displacement principle are structural and overwhelming.

Of course, rotary pumps are not all-powerful. Their efficiency might be lower than centrifugal pumps when conveying low-viscosity media like pure water, and they are generally unsuitable for prolonged operation with the valve completely closed (i.e., "dead-heading"), having certain limitations on the back pressure of the outlet pipeline. However, it is precisely these characteristics that define the main battlefield of cam rotor pumps: industrial process areas involving high viscosity, solid content, the need for precise metering, or requirements for low-shear conveying.
