Most People Don't Know: Actually, This Step in Pump Selection Determines 80% of the Success Rate! (Part1)
- Time of issue:2026-01-06
(Summary description)Content Overview: The selection of a pump is far from simply matching flow and head; the foundation of its success lies in the precise capture and definition of core parameters during the preliminary stage. The physical and chemical properties of the conveyed medium—such as its corrosiveness, viscosity, and solid content—directly determine the material and structural fate of the pump. Process parameters like flow rate, head, temperature, and available Net Positive Suction Head (NPSHa) are the direct inputs for selection calculations. Neglecting on-site environmental conditions, operating cycles, and other factors may lead to installation failure or operational risks.

When selecting a rotor pump, the first and most crucial step is not to hastily consult product catalogs, but to precisely define and obtain all relevant selection parameters. This is because the robustness of the parameter foundation directly determines the reliability of the entire selection scheme.

The primary consideration is the physical and chemical properties of the conveyed medium. The medium is not just a name like "water" or "oil"; its inherent characteristics are the decisive factors in selecting the pump material and structural type. It is essential to clarify the medium's corrosiveness, abrasiveness, toxicity, and whether it is prone to crystallization. For example, conveying concentrated sulfuric acid requires the use of high-silicon cast iron or special alloys; slurries containing hard particles necessitate consideration of wear-resistant materials like high-chromium alloys and may call for open impellers or special centrifugal pumps, reciprocating pumps. The density and viscosity of the medium directly affect the pump's shaft power and performance curve. High-viscosity media can significantly degrade the performance of centrifugal pumps, making positive displacement pumps potentially more suitable. Furthermore, the vapor pressure of the medium and its possible gas content are important bases for assessing the pump's susceptibility to cavitation.
The second category of core parameters comes from process requirements. Flow rate (Q) is the fundamental data for pump selection. The process side should provide normal, minimum, and maximum flow rates. During selection, the pump's rated flow rate should generally not be less than the system's maximum flow rate, or a safety margin of 1.1 to 1.15 times the normal flow rate can be taken. Head (H) refers to the pressure head required by the process system. Its calculation must be accurate, including the sum of pipeline resistance, elevation difference, pressure difference, etc. The pump's rated head is typically taken as 1.05 times the system's required head to overcome unforeseen resistances. Inlet pressure (Ps) and outlet pressure (Pd) not only affect pipeline design but also relate to the pressure rating of the pump casing and the selection of shaft seal type. The medium temperature (T) range needs to be clearly defined, as it relates to material thermal expansion, mechanical seal selection, and cooling system setup. Available Net Positive Suction Head (NPSHa) is a parameter that is extremely easy to overlook but of paramount importance. It must be greater than the pump's Required Net Positive Suction Head (NPSHr) with a safety margin; otherwise, the pump will experience cavitation, leading to performance degradation and component damage.
Third, on-site installation and operating conditions are equally important. Will the pump be installed indoors or outdoors? What are the ambient temperature and humidity? Is there an explosive hazardous area? These conditions determine the motor's protection class (e.g., IP55), explosion-proof requirements (e.g., flameproof motors), and whether insulation or heat tracing is needed. Is the operation continuous or intermittent? Conditions involving frequent starts and stops pose severe challenges to the pump's mechanical structure, seals, and motor.
Only after comprehensively and accurately collecting and analyzing the above three aspects of information—medium characteristics, process parameters, and site conditions—can the selection work be considered to have laid a solid data foundation. Only then can we proceed to the next step: selecting the appropriate type of pump.
