Is the 1:10 Relationship Between PN and MPa a Simplified Truth in Engineering or a Selection Trap?

Is the 1:10 Relationship Between PN and MPa a Simplified Truth in Engineering or a Selection Trap?

(Summary description)In the selection of pipelines and valves,PN and MPa are often confused or simply converted. In reality, the former is a pressure rating code that varies with material and temperature, while the latter is an international unit of pressure representing a specific physical quantity.Understanding the difference between the two is crucial for system safety and design accuracy—it is by no means a simple numbers game.

In engineering design and equipment selection, the correct understanding and application of pressure units are of vital importance. Many often regard PN(Nominal Pressure)and MPa(Megapascal)as numerically interchangeable, even mistakenly believing that there is a fixed"10:1"relationship.Such misunderstanding may lead to selection errors and even safety hazards. So,what is the essential difference between the two?

PN is not a directly measurable pressure value but rather a standardized pressure rating identifier. It represents the maximum allowable working pressure that components such as pipelines, flanges, and valves can withstand under specific materials and a reference temperature. For example,PN16 indicates that under the reference temperature for carbon steel(typically 120°C),the rated pressure of the component is approximately 16 bar. However,as the temperature increases, the strength of the material decreases, and the actual pressure-bearing capacity of the same PN rating will also decline—this is precisely why"temperature-pressure tables"must be consulted in engineering for correction.

MPa,on the other hand,is a physical pressure unit in the International System of Units. One MPa equals 10⁶Pascals,approximately equivalent to 10.2 kgf/cm².It is used to express actual design pressure, working pressure,or test pressure, serving as an absolute physical quantity that can be measured and calculated, with its numerical value inherently independent of temperature.

The roles of the two in engineering are entirely different:PN is an"interface rating"used to ensure the compatibility of connecting components such as flanges and valves, while MPa is a"parameter unit"used to describe the actual pressure state of the system. For instance, designers may select a PN40 flange based on a"design pressure of 2.5 MPa and a temperature of 300°C,"whereas a procurement document would only specify"PN16"to ensure connection compatibility.

Although there exists an empirical estimation of"PN value÷10≈MPa value"at ambient temperature, such as PN16 corresponding to approximately 1.6 MPa,this is merely a rough reference.Under high-temperature,high-pressure,or special material conditions, precise selection must be based on the temperature-pressure rating tables in standards such as GB/T and ASME,and reliance on simple conversion is strictly inadvisable.

In summary,PN is a"capability label"that fluctuates with temperature, while MPa is a constant"measurement scale."In engineering practice, clearly distinguishing between the two is essential for achieving safe, economical, and compliant system design.
