Ten Incorrect Usage Methods That Damage Rotor Pumps
Rotor pumps are crucial equipment in the industrial sector, and their operation is vital to the entire production process. However, early damage to pumps in many plants is not due to equipment aging but rather improper usage. The following ten incorrect practices are primary reasons causing rotor pumps to halt operation.

1.Overload Operation
Allowing the pump to operate for extended periods beyond its designed flow, pressure,or speed standards. This state of overload rapidly accelerates wear on internal components, leading to swift performance degradation and even instantaneous damage.
2.Poor Inlet Conditions
Problems at the pump's suction end can directly cause cavitation and feed insufficiency.Examples include a low inlet liquid level forming vortices and drawing in air, pipeline blockages by foreign objects, elevated medium temperature increasing vaporization pressure, excessive bends or undersized inlet pipes increasing resistance, and high installation altitude reducing atmospheric pressure—all severely impair the pump's suction capability.
3.Running with Valve Closed
For standard rotor pumps,if operation continues with the outlet valve fully closed and without shutdown, all the work done by the pump converts into heat, causing a rapid temperature rise in the medium. This triggers severe cavitation, resulting in significantly increased pump vibration and noise, which can induce mechanical failures.
4.Chemical Corrosion
Transporting chemically corrosive media, such as hydrochloric acid or hydrofluoric acid, can cause chemical corrosion if the material of the pump's wetted parts is improperly selected.Corroded surfaces often exhibit dense,honeycomb-like pits, seriously affecting structural integrity and sealing performance.
5.Media Abrasion and Erosion
When the medium contains hard solid particles, these particles continuously scour the pump cavity, rotor, and other wetted parts during flow.Prolonged abrasive wear steadily decreases pump efficiency and output performance;severely eroded surfaces may show fish-scale-like patterns.
6.Excessive Pump Cavity Pressure
Blocked outlet pipelines, abnormally high inlet pressure,or liquid freezing inside the pump cavity in extremely cold conditions can cause internal pressure to far exceed the pump's pressure-bearing limit. The most direct consequence in such extreme situations is pump body rupture.
7.Unstable Installation Foundation
Installing the pump on a foundation with insufficient rigidity or lacking vibration damping measures,or without proper support for inlet and outlet pipes, causes uneven force distribution during operation and abnormal vibration. This significantly compromises its operational stability and service life.
8.Inadequate Motor Protection
Whether it's a dry pump long-term in a humid environment,or failure of mechanical seals and cable seals in submersible pumps, moisture or liquid can ingress into the motor interior. The presence of water stains or condensation inside the motor drastically reduces insulation resistance, posing a risk of short circuits and burnout.
9.Lack of Maintenance
Failing to perform regular inspections, replace wear-prone parts(e.g.,mechanical seals),apply necessary anti-rust paint to metal pump bodies,or monitor vibration according to specifications allows minor issues to accumulate into major, irreparable failures.
10.Poor Heat Dissipation Environment
If the rotor pump is installed in a poorly ventilated corner or an enclosed space, preventing the motor's cooling fan from achieving effective air circulation, the equipment can overheat and become damaged.
