Information

In the industrial sector, rotor pumps,as critical equipment for fluid transport, have their material selection directly impacting service life and operational stability.Stainless steel is a commonly used material, and the various types such as 201,304,and 316 often cause confusion. They look similar, yet their prices can differ by several times.Choosing the wrong material not only increases costs but may also lead to equipment corrosion and production interruptions.

The core difference actually lies in the proportion of alloying elements. The"stainless"property of stainless steel primarily relies on the protective oxide film formed on the surface by chromium, while nickel enhances material toughness and corrosion resistance.Additionally, the introduction of molybdenum significantly improves the material's resistance to pitting corrosion in chloride-containing environments. The differences in the ratios of these three elements essentially determine the properties of the stainless steel.

Specifically:201 stainless steel is an economical material that reduces costs by partially replacing nickel with manganese and nitrogen. Its corrosion resistance is limited;it is particularly prone to rusting in humid or chemically aggressive environments. Therefore,it is only suitable for general dry environments or conveying non-corrosive fluids. It is not suitable for contact with acids, alkalis,or chloride-containing media, otherwise, material corrosion could lead to pump damage and product contamination.

304 stainless steel, with its classic proportion of 18%chromium and 8%nickel,achieves a good balance between corrosion resistance and economy, making it the preferred choice for food, pharmaceutical, and general industrial fields. It can resist erosion from most common chemical media, being safe and stable. Thus,it is widely used in water treatment, food conveyance, and rotor pumps for mild chemical environments, representing a reliable choice that balances safety and cost.

316 stainless steel is based on 304 but adds about 2%molybdenum.This gives it excellent resistance to chloride corrosion, making it especially suitable for coastal areas, seawater treatment,or handling saline,chlorine-containing chemical media.Although the price is higher, under harsh operating conditions, its long-term corrosion resistance can significantly reduce maintenance frequency and lifecycle costs. It is suitable for high-standard chemical, marine engineering,or electroplating industries.

So,what aspects should be considered in practical rotor pump selection?

First, clearly define the application scenario and medium characteristics. If used for general low-viscosity or non-corrosive liquids,304 material is sufficient. If the medium contains acids, alkalis, salts,or chloride ions, then 316 material should be prioritized.201 material is only recommended for short-term,low-cost applications with no corrosion risk.

Second, pay attention to material identification and supplier qualifications.High-quality rotor pumps will indicate the material type on the pump body or nameplate.Choosing reputable brands and requesting material certificates are effective ways to avoid inferior substitutes.

Therefore, for rotor pump materials, the highest grade isn't necessarily the best;the goal should be a balance between"suitability and economy."Understanding the inherent differences between 201,304,and 316 materials and making judgments based on specific working conditions allows equipment investment to deliver maximum value and ensures the long-term stable operation of the production process.
