In the protection system of industrial pressure equipment,there is a component called—the safety valve.Its precise operation relies on the reasonable setting and mutual coordination of several core pressure parameters.The relationship between the set pressure,the design pressure of the container,and the maximum allowable working pressure forms the cornerstone of the equipment's overpressure protection logic.

The set pressure is the static inlet pressure at which the safety valve disc begins to lift and the medium starts to discharge continuously under operating conditions.This pressure essentially serves as the"action command"point for the safety valve.The design pressure refers to the pressure used to determine the shell thickness and component dimensions of the container at the corresponding design temperature,i.e.,the maximum pressure the container is designed to withstand.It represents the fundamental guarantee line for the container's structural strength.The maximum allowable working pressure is the maximum gauge pressure allowed at the top of the container under specific operating conditions.This pressure value is calculated based on the effective thickness and material properties of each pressure-bearing component of the container.It may be equal to or higher than the design pressure and is a more precise upper limit for pressure control during the actual operation of the container.

How are they related?The core principle is:the set pressure of the safety valve should not exceed the design pressure of the protected container.This is a fundamental requirement to ensure that the container itself does not undergo plastic deformation or damage before the safety valve activates.When the maximum allowable working pressure is indicated on the design drawings or nameplate,it is often used as a more precise benchmark in engineering practice.In this case,the set pressure of the safety valve can be determined based on this maximum allowable working pressure.Typically,the set pressure is set at a level less than or equal to the design pressure,but it may be close to or equal to the level of the maximum allowable working pressure.

This relationship manifests more concretely in the selection and setting process of safety valves.Usually,the set pressure of the safety valve is determined based on the normal working pressure of the container,often with a certain margin.Subsequently,the design pressure of the container needs to be set equal to or slightly higher than this set pressure value.This logical chain of"working pressure<set pressure≤design pressure(or maximum allowable working pressure)"ensures a clear pressure hierarchy:normal operation remains within a safe range,and in the event of overpressure,the safety valve can open and relieve pressure before the container reaches its pressure-bearing limit,thereby containing the pressure within safe boundaries.

When only one safety valve is installed,its set pressure(i.e.,the actuation pressure)must be set to be no greater than the design pressure,and the maximum pressure(overpressure limit)reached by the entire container system during the relief process is strictly controlled.If multiple pressure relief devices are installed,the set pressure of the main safety valve is also capped by the design pressure,while the set pressure of auxiliary safety valves is allowed to be appropriately increased.However,the overpressure limit for the entire system consequently becomes more stringent.These regulations collectively ensure that under any anticipated accident condition,the pressure borne by the container will not exceed the limits that its structural strength can withstand.
