Chemical pumps are critical equipment for handling corrosive,volatile,or toxic media.Their sealing performance directly impacts operational safety and efficiency.Commonly used sealing methods mainly fall into seven categories,each with distinct characteristics and application ranges.

Oil seals are self-tightening lip-type seals,featuring simple structure and low cost.They are suitable for low-pressure applications with clean media but demand high shaft machining precision and are not resistant to high pressure.Leakage can easily occur if the media contains particles or if installation is improper.

Gasket sealing is a primary form of static sealing.It achieves sealing by compressing the gasket to fill minor imperfections on the flange surface.Gasket material must be selected based on media properties:non-metallic gaskets like rubber and PTFE are often used for normal temperature and low to medium-pressure conditions;metal composite gaskets are suitable for high-temperature and high-pressure environments.

Packing sealing converts axial force into radial sealing force via a gland.It has a simple structure and strong adaptability but involves certain wear and leakage,requiring regular adjustment and maintenance.Its leakage paths primarily include the packing itself,and the clearances with the stuffing box and the shaft surface.

Power seals include forms like auxiliary impellers and centrifugal seals.They rely on rotor dynamics to create a pressure difference that blocks leakage,offering effective sealing during operation.However,auxiliary sealing devices are needed during shutdown.This type of seal is particularly suitable for media containing solid particles.

Mechanical seals(end face seals)are currently widely used high-efficiency sealing forms.They achieve sealing through the contact between rotating and stationary ring end faces,featuring low leakage and long service life.Materials like PTFE and silicon carbide can be chosen for corrosion resistance.Attention must be paid to installation precision and cooling conditions to prevent dry friction and thermal cracking.

Thread sealing is commonly used for small-diameter connections,including two forms:gasket sealing and thread sealant sealing.Pressure-bearing capacity is closely related to thread machining quality.It is mostly used for auxiliary pipelines or inspection ports.

Labyrinth seals rely on tortuous clearances to increase flow resistance.Theoretically,they offer good sealing effectiveness but require extremely high machining and assembly precision.In practical applications,they can easily fail due to clearance deviations,excessive oil,or temperature rise,and are thus seldom used in chemical pumps.

Selecting the appropriate seal for a chemical pump starts with the media characteristics:For highly corrosive,particulate-containing,or toxic volatile media,mechanical seals or power seals are preferable,potentially paired with double seal arrangements and barrier fluid systems.For low to medium-pressure clean media,packing or oil seals can be considered.Material compatibility must also be noted;for example,fluororubber and PTFE are often used for corrosive conditions,and the pairing of rotating and stationary rings needs to balance wear resistance and lubrication properties.Rational selection,standardized installation,and regular maintenance are essential to ensure the long-term safe operation of chemical pumps.
